The Death of Audience Targeting: Why Broad + Creative Wins in 2026
Interest-based targeting is dead. Meta's algorithm finds buyers better than you can. Here's why broad targeting with strong creative is the winning formula.
Your Carefully Built Audiences Are Hurting Your Performance
In 2022, the best media buyers obsessed over audiences. They built custom lookalikes, stacked interest layers, created exclusion lists, and spent hours engineering the perfect targeting combination. And it worked — because Meta's algorithm needed that guidance.
In 2026, the algorithm doesn't need your help anymore. In fact, your "sophisticated" audience targeting is probably holding it back.
Meta, TikTok, and Google have all moved toward machine-learning-driven targeting systems that outperform human audience selection at scale. Meta's Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns, TikTok's Smart Performance Campaigns, and Google's Performance Max all share the same philosophy: give the algorithm a conversion objective and strong creative, then get out of the way.
The data supports this shift overwhelmingly. Across our portfolio at Adspend, broad-targeted campaigns consistently outperform interest-stacked campaigns by 20-40% on cost per acquisition — with higher scale potential.
Why Interest Targeting Stopped Working
The Data Pool Shrank
iOS privacy changes removed a massive chunk of the behavioral data that powered interest targeting. When Meta can't see what apps someone uses, what websites they visit, or what they purchase — interest categories become unreliable approximations.
The Algorithm Got Smarter
Meta's conversion optimization algorithm now processes billions of signals to predict who will buy — including signals you can't see or select in Ads Manager. Device type, scroll speed, engagement patterns, time of day, content consumption habits — the algorithm weighs thousands of data points that no human could manually target.
When you add interest targeting, you're saying "only show this to people who like yoga." But the algorithm might know that your best buyers are actually people who watch cooking videos at 11 PM on their iPads. Your interest restriction prevents the algorithm from finding them.
Audience Overlap Kills Efficiency
With multiple ad sets targeting overlapping interest groups, your campaigns bid against each other in the same auction. You're driving up your own costs. Broad targeting with a single prospecting campaign eliminates this self-competition entirely.
The New Framework: Creative as Targeting
Here's the paradigm shift: in a broad-targeting world, your creative does the targeting. The algorithm shows your ad to a wide pool of people. Your creative determines who pays attention and who scrolls past.
A UGC video that opens with "If you're a Shopify store owner doing $100K/month..." will naturally attract Shopify store owners doing $100K/month. The algorithm learns from the people who engage, click, and convert — and then finds more people like them.
This means:
Different creatives reach different audiences — even within the same broad campaign. A hook about shipping delays attracts a different buyer than a hook about product quality. Each creative is effectively its own targeting strategy.
Creative volume matters more than audience engineering — Instead of spending hours building audiences, spend that time producing more creative variations. Five different hooks will reach five different buyer segments automatically.
Creative testing is the new audience testing — When you test a new creative angle, you're actually testing a new audience hypothesis. The creative determines who the algorithm optimizes for.
How to Structure Broad Campaigns
The Simple Setup
Campaign level:
- Objective: Sales / Conversions
- Campaign type: Advantage+ Shopping (for e-commerce) or standard Sales campaign
- Budget: Campaign-level (Advantage Campaign Budget)
Ad set level:
- Targeting: Country-level only (US, or your target market)
- No interest targeting
- No lookalike audiences
- Age/gender restrictions only if your product is genuinely irrelevant to certain demographics (rare)
- Placement: Advantage+ Placements (let Meta decide)
Ad level:
- 3-6 active ads per campaign
- Mix of formats (UGC video, static, carousel)
- Different hooks and angles to reach different buyer segments
What About Retargeting?
Retargeting is the one exception to "go broad." Your retargeting campaign should target warm audiences — website visitors, cart abandoners, past purchasers — with specific messaging designed to close the sale.
But even retargeting is evolving. Meta's Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns include a built-in retargeting mechanism, showing relevant ads to warm audiences automatically. Many advertisers are consolidating everything into ASC and letting the algorithm handle the cold/warm split.
When Broad Doesn't Work
Broad targeting isn't magic. It requires two prerequisites:
Prerequisite 1: Strong Creative
If your creative is weak, broad targeting will fail spectacularly — because the algorithm has no signal to optimize against. Nobody engages with a boring ad, so the algorithm has no data to learn from, and your budget spreads thin across millions of unqualified impressions.
Broad targeting amplifies creative quality. Great creative scales. Bad creative wastes money faster.
Prerequisite 2: Accurate Tracking
The algorithm needs conversion data to optimize. If your tracking is broken — missing events, no CAPI, low Event Match Quality — the algorithm can't learn who's buying. It will optimize toward cheap clicks instead of valuable purchases.
Fix your tracking before you go broad. We never launch a broad campaign until CAPI is configured, events are verified, and EMQ scores are above 6.
The Proof Is in the Numbers
Here's what we typically see when we migrate a client from interest-stacked targeting to broad:
- Week 1-2: CPA may temporarily increase as the algorithm explores a wider audience
- Week 2-4: CPA stabilizes and often drops below the interest-targeted baseline
- Month 2+: Scale potential dramatically increases — broad campaigns can absorb 2-5x the budget without the audience saturation that plagues narrow targeting
The initial discomfort of "but who are we targeting?" goes away quickly when the results speak for themselves.
The Bottom Line
The best targeting strategy in 2026 is no targeting strategy at all — at least not in the traditional sense. Let Meta's algorithm find your buyers. Focus your energy on producing creative that attracts the right people, and tracking infrastructure that tells the algorithm who to find more of.
Audience engineering is a solved problem. The algorithm does it better than you can. Creative engineering is the unsolved problem — and that's where your competitive advantage lives.
